Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Controller will provide strategic support and leadership within the finance team and across the organization to ensure the financial health and operational efficiency of the company. The Assistant Controller will provide the day-to-day management of financial reporting, corporate accounting processes and financial compliance to ensure an effective financial close and consolidation process and a sound internal control environment. This role is responsible for assisting the Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Controller with establishing or evolving accounting policies and procedures and internal controls. This will result in assurance that financial records are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and the risk of financial fraud is minimized. The Assistant Controller is responsible for daily accounting operations, ensuring compliance with internal and external financial regulations and contributes to strategic financial planning and analysis as needed. This role reports directly to the Corporate Controller and will oversee a team responsible for general accounting activities, accruals, financial reporting, internal audit, inventory controls and fixed assets. 

 

Financial Reporting: 

  • GAAP accounting and internal and external financial reporting. 
  • Leads the monthly close and consolidation activities and leads the preparation of all internal and external reports and audited financial statements. 
  • Provides oversight and direction to plant controller and operations team as needed. 
  • Responsible for the evaluation of changes in accounting principles and applying the appropriate accounting principles to accounting transactions and events, including the development, documentation, implementation and maintenance of accounting policies. 
  • Provides strategic and directional guidance to build robust financial reporting, including assisting in and leading the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. 
  • Analyzes financial data to identify trends, variances, and areas of opportunity to create efficiency. 
  • Partners with Controller and broader team to ensure timely and accurate visibility of results to functional leaders.  
  • Oversees the maintenance of the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial records. 
  • Ensure timely reconciliation of all accounts. 
  • Identifies continuous improvement opportunities and implements change. 

Corporate Accounting 

  • Responsible for leading and supporting all technical accounting activities, most notably impairment testing and the valuation of intangibles. 
  • Supports strategic initiatives such as acquisitions, entity restructuring, debt | equity financing and other initiatives as undertaken by the Company. 
  • Assists with the coordination and management of all audit activities and issues. 
  • Interacts with external audit partner(s) as needed. 
  • Responsible for representing the accounting function in cross-functional projects and initiatives and ensuring all accounting and control implications have been considered. 
  • Accounting for hedging and treasury activities. 

Internal Controls and Financial Compliance 

  • Functions as the technical expert in control requirements, including the identification of new control regulations and assessment of the impact to the Company, and ensures that the proper oversight and documentation of the Company’s system of internal controls over accounting and financial reporting is in place. 
  • Serves as point person for the general ledger and EPM system maintenance and leads recommendations and subsequent implementations. 
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements.

Qualifications and Skills

Education and/or Experience  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required 
  • CPA designation is strongly preferred 
  • Experience in CPG or food industry is strongly preferred.  
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory and transformation roles.  
  • Technical accounting expertise, including advanced accounting principles and the ability to research and apply such principles to complex accounting transactions. 
  • Experience in identifying control weaknesses and implementing the proper remediation plans. 
  • Experience with complex transactions including, but not limited to acquisitions, divestitures, debt financing, etc. 
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management. 
  • Technical accounting expertise, including advanced accounting principles and the ability to research and apply such principles to complex accounting transactions. 

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management 
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards 
  • Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems; experience implementing and supporting change management for such systems is preferred. 
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.   
  • Experience supporting cross functional teams and stakeholders.  
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.  

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals and data, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public. 

Reasoning Ability 

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables

Bay Area California compensation range: $142,400- $213,600
